An incredible sight meets the eye when we drive into a truck drivers’ stop, in the heart of Karachi city. Often a main stopping point for trucks that come to Karachi, the Mauripur truck “ada” is transformed today into a fashion shoot. The male truck drivers, caught off guard, crowd around the models to get a piece of the action as our photographer Zeeshan Haider snaps away.
The models, wearing designs by Sanam Agha and Adnan Pardesi, pose as the trucks loom in the backdrop. Kalki and Sabiha chat to the designers, models and truck drivers about the changes in Pakistan; Will truck drivers allow their women to model? What does democracy mean for them: what are their hopes and dreams? What do they mean when they talk about a prevalent culture of fear?
Over the last decade the fashion, media and television industries have boomed, opening numerous employment opportunities for the youth, particularly women, from all strata of society. The models and men show the contradictions of modern Pakistan that coexist side by side.
